The Stanford Prison Experiment was conducted in 1971. You may have heard of it, since it is the most famous experiment in all of psychology, appears in countless introductory textbooks and has at had a major motion picture made dramatizing its results. These results are somewhat disheartening in that it claims to show that all of us are equally capable of cruelty to other people if we are only put in a position of power over them. The reality, however, as far as both the experiment and human beings goes, is a bit more complicated than this.
