📋 Your Fallacy Is…

Fallacies are bad arguments that seem at first glance to be good ones. They rely on the tricks and on built-in bugs in the human mind to convince of things that there is insufficient evidence for. The website below contains a sampling of some of the many ways in which we tend to get things wrong when assessing evidence. Can you think of any real life examples of these?

I find it interesting that there are so many logical fallacies that we know and understand and yet many of us still fall prey to. I think one of the most prominent one’s in our country over the last year has been false cause. Especially in the media. Many news sources present information in a. way that appears to prove causation; however, it is always important to remember that correlation does not prove causation.

Now that I understand what this is and how we can be tricked, I recognize this in many aspects of my life. especially what we hear in the media.

I learned about logical fallacies in high school but never went this in depth. I never knew how many different logical fallacies there were although I feel as if it is important to learn about all of the different types.

I never realized how many fallacies there were in the world until reading this and the past article. Many fallacies I have experienced and re-thought about them, such as “because authority is claiming something, it must be true”. Not to get political at all, but I watch many police interaction videos on youtube, and many of the cops believe that because they “are the law” they know everything. Many people in the videos try to contest the statement the cop says by providing things such as documentation or factual citing’s in articles.

There are so many fallacies that are linked to religion. But it is really easy to spread fake logic and get people to believe in things that re not true, it has been happing in the world for centuries now and people don’t question most of them because it causes problems. Now with the uprise of social media and the spread of information being the highest its ever been, fake logic and information are being put out everyday and a rate that you cant prove which is real or not.

After reading about the numerous logical fallacies, I quickly realized that I have encountered almost all of them. Embarrassingly enough, I am positive I too have used some of these fallacies both knowingly and unknowingly when trying to “win” or sound convincing during an argument. I am glad I learned about the many fallacies because having this knowledge will help me to more easily detect and avoid them. Also, it will help me to be more logical and well reasoned when making future arguments!

It is interesting to read about all the different kinds of fallacies that exist and think about examples for each and every one of them in our day-to-day life. Some fallacies that really caught my eye were the appeal to emotions, the bandwagon fallacy, and the appeal to authority. Most of these fallacies are even used by political leaders and news outlets and the media in general. Every person in their life has used at least one of these fallacies when debating a topic, it is good to know about them in an attempt to prevent using them too much.
