Too often people make blanket claims about “the news media,” “the mainstream press”, or just “the media.” Not only are these generalizations typically false, but they miss the point that what we call “the media” is not any single thing or institution, but a whole huge collection of many different individuals, organization, alliances and other social groups, playing specific roles in a broader social context. Yes people within this tangled mess of publishers, websites, TV stations, newspapers, press bureaus, etc do coordinate their efforts at times in a variety of ways. But when assessing ANY claim at all that you get from a media, or news source, it helps to get particular. Know your sources. See what they have done in the past. How many times do they just report facts, embed those facts in a plausible larger context, embellish those facts with speculation for partisan reasons, outright make things up?
